General Description - SuperSound Systems
Each SuperSound System uses a version of SoundFX. SoundFX is a mouse
driven graphical sound editor / digitizer / playback control software
for capture, creation, modification, and playback of full fidelity
digital audio using the SoundCard or other sound hardware. Keyboard
controls can be used instead of a mouse, if desired.
SoundFX displays sound graphically and provides control over the modes
of operation of the SoundCard, SoundJr or other supported hardware.
Recording functions are not available with the SoundFX-Jr sound
editor.
Use of the SoundFX is very easy because of pull-down menus, on-screen
help displays, and mouse interface.
Sound is treated like a visual object so that you can edit by mark,
cut, copy, and save operations, as you would with text in a word
processor. The mix, generation, level adjust, and frequency shifting
operations are similar to what you would do with colors and shapes in
a graphics program.
Key Features:
File Menu
The File Menu covers full file handling operations for listing,
saving, getting, renaming files and changing current directory while
in the editor.
Edit Menu
The Edit Menu gives access to sound file editing functions of Clear
Block (no sound), Delete Block (remove from file and discard), Cut to
Buffer (remove from file but save), Copy to Buffer, Replace from
Buffer (overwrite current sound), Insert from Buffer (add between
present sounds), Overlay from Buffer (mix with present sounds), and
Switch Channels (swap left and right). These functions operate on
the part of the sound file defined by the cursors in the display window.
Play/Record Menu
The Play/Record Menu covers:
Playback Whole (play the whole sound file),
Playback Block (just play between the cursor positions),
*Monitor (play the signal being sampled in real time),
*Sound Level (display peak energy of the signal being sampled in real
time), *Record Whole, and
*Record Block (record just between the cursor positions).
Silicon Shack - Product Catalog - Page 3
Modify/Create Menu
This menu lists advanced sound transformation functions such as:
*Filter (separate adjustable 2nd order low and high pass),
*Echo (2nd order with dual adjustments for delay and damping),
Amplify/Attenuate,
*Envelope (shape sound level versus time graphically ),
Reverse (for playing backwards),
Noise (random sound generator),
Tone (pure sinewave, square wave and triangle),
*AM Generator (amplitude modulated),and
FM Generator (frequency modulated).
All functions have wide adjustment ranges and directly create
waveforms from 1Hz to 20KHz with a 1Hz resolution.
Settings Menu
This menu covers settings for playing, recording, and viewing sound
files such as:
*Display Settings (for sound window scales and units),
Play/Record (for setting sampling rates and sound file length in time
or bytes),
*Resample (to convert a sound file sampled at one rate to another
rate),
*Calibrate, and
*Stereo / Mono Mode switch (stereo system version only - to select
stereo or mono operation).
(*These functions are not available with SoundFX-Jr.)
Help Menu
You can use this menu to access a full on-line help file on the use
and operation of the SuperSound System. The menu is organized by menu
bar items and general subjects, such as How to Record, How to Play,
How to Save, etc.
The Sound of SuperSound
You will not believe such sounds could be produced by a IBM-PC until
you hear the SuperSound Systems. The sound quality of SuperSound is
better than many tape recorders because of the digital recording and
playback techniques used are similar to that of a compact disk system.
Special Effects
The flexible and innovative sound creation and editing functions of
SoundFX editors give you exciting tools to develop sound effects not
possible before even on costly dedicated systems. The complex
functions in SoundFX editors allow you to create sounds with
characteristics limited only by your imagination.
Adjustable Controls
Digital or sampled sound recording with the SuperSound Systems is a
little more complex than using your home magnetic tape recorder. The
SoundFX editors can be set to a wide range of sampling and playback
rates for special effects operations.

SuperSound-Engineering
This system is a special engineering version of SuperSound designed
for those applications that need customized digitizing and playback
hardware. Also SoundFX-Eng, the graphical user interface editor has
added features for the technical user. Options include a complete set
of Programmer's Libraries for writing custom code at the hardware
level, Component Kits, and Sensors.
SoundFX-Eng is a signal editor / digitizer / playback control software
for capture, creation, modification, and playback of dual digital
audio signals using the SoundCard-E. The sound system and waveform
display is somewhat like a two channel analog digital storage
oscilloscope.
Unlike with regular digital storage oscilloscopes, sound in
SoundFX-Eng is treated like a real visual object, so that you can
edit by mark, cut, copy, and save operations, as you would with text
in a word processor.
The SoundFX-Eng editor saves you time and effort in many different
engineering applications such as testing of printed circuit boards,
speaker or audio network response, RF telemetry links, and acoustics.
You can use it to produce clear voice alarms or other audio signals
and load them into EPROMs for fixed playback applications.
Key Features:
See the general description of SoundFX for base features. Added
features of SoundFX-Eng are covered below.
Play/Record Menu
The Play/Record Menu covers playback and recording operations. Added
functions are:
Trigger Level Adjust, Record/Play Whole, and
Record/Play Block.
You can record from the right channel while playing the left channel
and you can start any recording manually or with an input signal going
over the trigger level.
Modify/Create Menu
This menu lists more advanced sound transformation functions. All
functions have wide adjustment ranges and directly create waveforms
from 0.1Hz to 99KHz with a 0.1Hz resolution and 1% to 99% duty cycle
control.
Play
With PLAY.EXE any new program can incorporate SuperSound data or
sounds by the use of QuickBASIC "SHELL", C "SYSTEM" or equivalent
functions. Low level software drivers are available for QuickBasic,
QuickC, MicroSoft C and Turbo C, C++.
Silicon Shack - Product Catalog - Page 5
SoundCard-E
The SoundCard-E is a special engineering version of the SoundCard
using select components. It is a short-length IBM PC type plug-in
printed circuit board that has two channels of preamplifers, sound
sampling A/D 8 bit digitizers and D/A 8 bit reconstructers, filters
and playback power amplifiers. The latest VLSI analog/digital ICs are
used for a compact reliable design.
The SoundCard-E has no jumpers to set and does not use the DMA channel
or any interrupts so you get an easy installation. Because there is no
potential for conflict with other I/O operations, you get the widest
range of real-time signal handling in an IBM-PC.
Dual Analog Inputs/Outputs
The SoundCard-E has a 1/8" stereo input jack for recording external
signals and a 1/8" stereo output jack for connection of external
loads, speakers or headphones. The input channels, each with level
adjustments, have high sensitivity for direct connection to low
impedance sources, transducers, or microphones. The output channels,
also with level controls, each drive up to 1 watt into external low
impedance loads. Each sound channel has complex built-in smoothing
and anti-aliasing filters that you can customize for your specific
application.
User Defined Filters and Amp Gain
The SoundCard-E has special component pin sockets that allow you to
change the input and output filters charateristics and amplifiers
stage gain from the factory settings.
Special Data Modification Functions
The flexible data creation and editing functions of SoundFX-Eng give
you an easy-to-use tool to handle data and sounds and develop audio
signal processing applications. The range of functions in SoundFX-Eng
allow you to create signals and sounds of unlimited variety.
The SuperSound Engineering System includes: SoundFX-Eng, Play,
SoundCard-E, a microphone, RCA input/output cables, and 2 1/2"
mini-speakers.

What is TurboSound?
TurboSound is proprietary sound reproduction software that allows any
standard IBM-PC, PS/2, NEC 9800 computer or 100% compatible to
produce AM radio quality voice and sound output. The sounds are
produced through the standard built-in speaker with absolutely no
hardware modifications required. Contact for latest prices.
Now you capture any sound with the SuperSound / SoundCard digitizer
hardware (included in the Developer's Kit) and add it into your
custom program. Your users play these sounds back with their standard
IBM-PC, PS/2 or NEC 9800 using digital audio technology like CDs.
What is TurboSound's sound quality?
The quality of the reproduced sound is equal to or better than AM
radio sound - not harsh square wave beeps or scratchy synthesized
text-to-voice sounds, but full rich sounds. There is no limit to the
types of sound you can add to your programs.
You can use actual human voices, animal sounds, bird calls, real
polyphonic, multi-voice music, etc. All sounds are as clear as a tape
recording. You will be proud of the quality sounds you can put into
your applications. Not like 1-bit shareware programs or "Lo-Fi"
video game sounds. So good it is used for language training!
Which PCs work with TurboSound?
Any IBM-PC or NEC 9800 series or compatible with a built-in speaker
will play full-fidelity sound with TurboSound. Portables and laptops
can play voices and music. The loudness and quality of the sound will
vary somewhat, depending on the size of the speaker and its placement
in the PC chassis. Give your user control over the sound volume too.
How do you get sounds for a program?
The sounds you need for your program can come from pre-recorded
digital sound libraries (like the SoundByte series), tapes, or live
recordings from microphone inputs. Any sound source can be used as
long as the material is not copyrighted or if you get the author's
permission.
How are the sounds edited?
You use SoundFX-III graphical interface sound editor to control the
recording, editing, special effects and modification of the sound.
What are the features and benefits?
TurboSound will add great value to your programs and make them stand
out from others that have only tinny beeps for communication to
users. Works with most programming languages, including Window 3
enhanced mode.

Who is Silicon Shack?
We are a young company founded by software and hardware engineers in
the heart of Silicon Valley. We have designed high-tech
integrated circuit based products, mostly for large corporations.
For many years we have bought and used PC software and hardware
products for both company and personal use. We often had a need to
present audio information using a PC. We could not find
moderately priced, easy-to-use products for handling real sound for
business presentations and training, so we designed our own.
Now we are making these products available to you. Our mission is to
provide you the best in IBM-PC digital audio sound software and
hardware at affordable prices.
